Fastest Pink Eye Remedy

by McKenna Gordon on January 31, 2014

Pink eye can be caused by allergies, or the same kinds of bacteria and viruses responsible for colds, ear infections, sinus infections, and sore throats. Typically, pinkeye is treated by doctors with an antibiotic. But there is mounting evidence that overuse of antibiotics causes drug resistance, and greatly damages the gut and immune system. I only use antibiotics in rare cases in which there isn’t a natural solution that works as well or better, or in situations where there IS an natural solution that works as well, but the situation is life threatening, in which case I choose to use both antibiotics and the natural solution.

Thanks to natural solutions like essential oils, herbs, homeopathy and others, my 7 year old has only had antibiotics a couple of times, my 4 year old once, and we’ve been lucky so far with my 1 year old. They aren’t suffering the long route through illnesses, they’re simply benefitting from a remedy that works with the body rather than against it, and can recover at least as quickly as when antibiotics are used.

It can be hard to tell whether a pinkeye infection is caused by a virus or bacteria. In general, the discharge associated with viral conjunctivitis is watery, whereas it will be thicker and more pus-like when the infection is caused by bacteria. When you wake up in the morning, your eyelids may be stuck together with dry crusties if it’s bacterial. Antibiotics will only help when pink eye is bacterial. But I don’t even need to resort to antibiotics when it is bacterial, because this solution works very quickly on both viral and bacterial pink eye.

One of the most slam-dunk remedies I have up my sleeve is Melaleuca (Tea Tree) essential oil for pinkeye. Pinkeye has absolutely no chance against this home remedy, and is usually cleared up overnight in only one application. I recently recommended this remedy to my sister, who had already made an appointment with her doctor the following morning for pinkeye, but needed some relief from the horrible itching and pain while she waited for her antibiotics. I suggested exactly what I’m about to detail out for you, and she called me the next morning and told me it was “MAGIC!!!” Her pink eye was completely gone and she didn’t end up seeing the doctor about it after all. So hence my silly magical graphic:

For children and adults, I apply 2 drops of Melaleuca essential oil, diluted in 2 drops of a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil, around the socket of the eye.  I put the drops in the palm of my hand and then dip my finger in the oils and apply them away from the eye, but near the socket: along the cheekbone, at the temples, and just above the eyebrow.

For babies, I use the same application, but I dilute 1 drop of Melaleuca into 3 or 4 drops of fractionated coconut oil. Many people also add a drop of Lavender essential oil into the mix. I have done this in the past and it works just as well, but usually I start with just Melaleuca, for no other reason than it’s easier, faster, and–for us, at least–works as well.

Often times, if the pinkeye is discovered in the evening, one application before bed is all that’s needed to wake up with a clear eye in the morning. If it’s discovered during the day, I reapply every 3 hours until the eye is clear and has no discomfort, and then I continue applying for another 24 hours for good measure.

Considering that a bottle of the highest quality of Melaleuca oil is only $19.00 wholesale, and will get our family through an estimated 20-30 eye infections, this solution is as low as 65 cents per incident, as opposed to a $20 doctor co-pay, plus however much the antibiotic solution costs.

Hey, I’m willing to pay MORE for natural solutions that are very effective and don’t have side-effects or detriments to overall health, so I get really excited about solutions that provide all of the above for a fraction of the cost of traditional healthcare. Thank you, nature!

I have extensively researched essential oils, and used them in my home for countless illnesses for many years. The brand I get the best results from bar none is here:

I have prepared a valuable 8-class series on essential oils. You can access these classes right now FREE by going to - in these classes I go over many solutions for common illnesses and also teach how to purchase oils at or below wholesale prices.

I had heard that breast milk will clear up eye infections. I am nursing now and we tried it on me and my husband and it totally worked! Just a couple drops in the eye and it cleared up in a day.

Appreciating the time and effort you put into your blog and in depth information you
present. It’s awesome to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same out of
date rehashed material. Excellent read! I’ve saved your site and I’m adding your RSS
