5 Healthy Breakfast Ideas

by McKenna Gordon on July 28, 2011

You already know it, you’ve been told over and over: breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But it’s also the one that’s usually most rushed, or skipped all together. Here are some ideas for quick breakfasts. If you don’t already, I urge you to make sure you’re getting some healthy calories within a couple hours of waking each morning.

1. Green Smoothies. Of course I’m going to start off with my favorite. I don’t mean to beat a dead horse or preach to the choir, because I know that most of my readers have already incorporated this. But if you haven’t dared yet, why not try it just once? This is the tastiest, fastest, and arguably one of the healthiest ways to get several servings of vegetables each day. For a growing list of my smoothies, click here. For a growing list of YOUR smoothies (contributed by my amazing readers), click here.

2. A Berry Good Start. 1/2 cup of fresh berries, 1/2 cup of high-protein Greek yogurt, a drizzle of honey, and a sprinkle of sliced almonds, sesame seeds, or crushed walnuts. This one will keep you feeling full for hours!

3. Nutrition To-Go I’m generally not a fan of protein shakes. They’re incredibly processed and although high in protein, the quality of protein isn’t always so great. But there are two that I’m very impressed with. Shakeology is not just a protein shake, but many other fantastic things (see left sidebar). And SunWarrior protein is a fantastic addition to your green smoothie.

4. Veggie Scramble. 1-2 eggs (depending on your calorie needs), and 1/2 – 1 cup of vegetables, scrambled together in a pan is a few minutes faster than making an omelet. My speedy trick? Add a handful of frozen mixed veggies to a hot pan, saute for 1 minute, drain off the water, then crack 2 eggs over it. Add sea salt and dill and serve! My favorite veggie mix for eggs is Asian stir-fry (those water chestnuts are a treat!)

5. Whole Grains. Morning is the best time to consume grains, because you have all day to burn them off. This is especially true if weight loss is your goal. One serving of non-instant whole grain oatmeal with a drizzle of almond milk, a drizzle of honey, and 1/4 cup blueberries is like an anti-oxidant, high-energy DESSERT! You can make the same with quinoa instead of oatmeal.

This is just what I needed! Grandkids are getting to the age where breakfast is becoming less and less appealing (teens!!)…Bet they wouldn’t turn down a fresh smoothie!!! Thanks McKenna!

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but I often feel like there is no time. These suggestions are great because they are quick fixes but very healthy and nutritious.

One of my favorite breakfasts is with packaged broccoli slaw. 1 Teaspoon EVOO in a non-stick skillet, throw in a couple good handfuls of broccoli slaw, saute for half a minute or so, then add beaten eggs (preferably whites) seasoned with a bit of Bragg Liquid Aminos. Reminds me a bit of Egg Foo Yong, but with no gravy. :)
